Is Vinyl Plank Right For Me?

Vinyl plank flooring is wonderful for homes, offices and commercial projects. One of its (many) benefits is that it’s easy to install. The process is quick and simple, and the floor can be used soon afterwards. It’s something many of our customers are curious about, since most flooring options need preparation, finishing and have other additional steps. So we thought we’d take you through the vinyl plank flooring installation process, and answer some questions on the subject.

Vinyl Plank Flooring Installation Methods

There are two main methods for installing vinyl. Here’s more about them:

Vinyl click flooring

In this method, the planks can be clicked into place with the help of an in-built locking system. The main benefit of this method is that it’s a lot easier, and is possible as a DIY project without professional help. If vinyl plank installation cost is an important factor for you, this method would be ideal.

Glue-down flooring

As the name suggests, in this method the planks are individually glued down to the floor. You’ll need professional help for this method, but the benefits are that you’ll have better results in the long term, and the floor will be stronger.

Commercial installation projects tend to steer towards glue-down flooring, but floating vinyl plank (in which the planks do not directly rest on the subfloor) are also very common. It’s quieter, and a little more comfortable.

The Vinyl Tile Flooring Installation Process

Vinyl can be installed over existing flooring, as long as it’s smooth, seamless and tightly sealed. Tile and vinyl are great examples of flooring that fits these criteria, and carpet is an example of flooring that doesn’t. So if your home already has carpet floors and you want to install luxury vinyl plank flooring, you’ll need to get the carpet removed first.

The installation process, assuming the floor is prepared, is simple. Vinyl comes with an attached pad, so there’s no need for underlayment. You can find vinyl that’s specifically designed for DIY installation, to make the process much simpler. It’s important to acclimate vinyl for a day or two prior to installation.

Now, depending on which method you want to use, you either click the planks into place, or peel the adhesive backing off and glue them into place. Vinyl is firm with a little flexibility (comparable to rubber or cork), so it’s easy to install if you have the materials and read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can vinyl flooring be installed outdoors?

We do not recommend it, because the added wear and tear can shorten its life. Plus, the sun’s radiation can cause the color to fade. We have other materials more suited for the outdoors at our discount flooring store near Redmond.

Will vinyl planks expand after installation?

It shouldn’t, as long as you follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions, or get the floor installed professionally. If installing floating floors, take extra care to make sure you follow the directions.

Can I put heavy appliances down on vinyl plank floor?

Absolutely! However, we recommend felt pads for furniture, so they don’t wear your floors down or leave a mark. Rubber can stain vinyl, so try and use other materials.
